Queretaro a state with a privileged location for the logistic sector
Queretaro is a privileged located State with connections to the most important markets since it is located on the road axis that connects the Metropolitan area of Mexico Valley with Nuevo Laredo in the south – north and, additionally in the West – Orient sense it is located in the intermediate part of the Gulf of Mexico – Pacific link. This provides an ideal factor for the logistic sector, the federal highways 45 and 57, considered as the spine road of Mexico, even named as NAFTA, they cross the state´s territory; placing the state of Queretaro in an insertion and distribution point of the particular, touristic and of freight transit towards different destinations in the country.
The logistics sector is mainly supported on terrestrial transportation that according to figures from the Infrastructure State Commission (CEI, by its Spanish initials) and the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT, by its Spanish initials) the roads network in the State includes a little more than 3 thousand 346 kilometers of roads, from which 19.5 % are free federal, 33.0 % state and 47.5 % rural roads that connect the more than 45 industrial parks settled in the entity.
It is a fact that the aerospace Industry has grown exponentially in the area benefiting all the industry sectors among them the logistic one. The Queretaro Intercontinental Airport (AIQ, by its Spanish initials) has a surface of 668 hectares that has contributed to the sector as it is one of the airports with greater growth in the country. It is important to mention that the AIQ has an infrastructure to receive any freight airplane.
Regarding aerial cargo in an assessment held in 2017 the Queretaro Intercontinental Airport had an accumulated of 10 thousand 209 tons, from which 3 thousand 38 were imports and 7 thousand 171 exports. Meanwhile in aerial cargo were recorded 24 thousand 736 tons, 14 thousand 529 national and 10 thousand 207 international, what means a growth 11 % regarding 2016.
On the other hand, the logistics sector of our State also offers the option of railroad transportation by having throughout its territory a railroad network of 520 kilometers longitude of tracks that cross the municipalities where the main industrial parks are located such as Colon, El Marques, Pedro Escobedo, Queretaro, San Juan del Rio and Tequisquiapan.
In addition, Queretaro has a connection with the main tracks of the railroad system: Mexico – Ciudad Juarez, Mexico – Nuevo Laredo, Mexico – Guadalajara – Manzanillo – Mexicali and Mexico – San Luis Potosi; all of them come together in the Queretaro Intercontinental Airport and additionally the capital of the State has a multimodal cargo that connects with the Altamira, Tamaulipas Port.
Railroad transportation despite not being a popular choice, it also represents a sustainable alternative and of more capacity for goods transportation. Today between 80 and 100 tons are moved on each box overcoming the capability of a freight truck.
Carlos Alberto Godinez Contreras, commercial director of TransPlex, said that the railroad is more environmental friendly, generating three times less carbon footprints than any other transportation, representing a dilemma to substitute up to 280 tractors in highways and streets, what means a traffic reduction and less wear of highways, thus saving the infrastructure cost.
Meanwhile, he indicated that the terrestrial transportation in our country highlights for being the main goods transportation means and, that it constantly faces different challenges such as safety, technology inclusion, lack of operators, certifications, among others.
Technology, logistics sector ally
Regarding technology inclusion in goods transportation service, it has being an ally regarding safety and a solution before the lack of human capital. Luis Manuel Medina, general director of TM Transportation Services, commented that in safety matters technology has allowed a better tracking of merchandises, nowadays most of the logistics companies use a GPS system, not only in tractors but also in the box to provide more security to the customer by having the vehicle tracking at any time. While, the technology operators supply has become a work facilitator, for example with the use of a tablet paper times were finished; when delivering the merchandise the operator does not have to wait to receive a letter, since everything is done by electronics means.
Technology has promises being an answer through the use of trucks without driver, tests already done in the United States and its arrival is anticipated to Mexico in a near future.
IMMEX based logistic services
Queretaro is among the first 10 entities in the country that concentrate a larger number of companies that are part of the program from the Manufacturing, Maquila and of Export Services (IMMEX, by its Spanish initials) and within a period of 10 years it increased the establishments in a 30 %, going from 167 in 2007 to 216 in 2017.
The Queretaro companies that belong to IMMEX represent 4.2 % of the total of these companies in the country, so that last year Queretaro was located in second place in the Bajio. According to INEGI, in 2016, Queretaro has accumulated 88 billion pesos of incomes from the foreign market resulting from the goods and services supply in IMMEX companies, 7,7 % more than the previous year.
Queretaro participates with 3.1 % of the manufacture exports nationwide, as there are 493 companies in the state that export through Queretaro customs, as well as 854 of other entities that fulfill operations through Queretaro.
Certifications a benefit for the supply chain
Certifications, thus they provide more security, they also provide benefits to companies, not only in Mexico, but also worldwide as they are involved in the world customs organization with the six frame.
“Of the benefits that Mexico has at customs level, such as self-correcting even by starting verification faculties or being able to make regime changes with consolidated customs declarations, that is, instead of doing 60 customs declarations in a month of regime change, those 60 can be made in a single declaration thus optimizing times, costs, customs agent fees. Additionally, belonging to this framework allows it to be less introspective when performing a review of the cargo, by means of x-rays or gamma rays,” commented Beatriz Ramos Garcia, responsible partner in the area of customs inspection of Van Beuren & Hamilton.
He mentioned that this certification is known as OEA and thus it is accepted in many countries in the specific case of the United Sates, they have the C-TPAT certification which certifies as safe supplier in this supply chain. However, having the OEA certification will allow an easier path to reach the requirements for the C-TPAT.
Logistics Sector Future in Queretaro
Every day the industry in the State is in need of a greater supply chain optimization, against that the creation of the Logistics Innovation Cluster was held which is constituted by 10 companies.
Among the main changes the cluster will have is achieving a better participation of the entire productive chain in foreign trade and logistic in the entity, which will include transportation companies, customs brokers and cargo generator companies. Also will be promoting the triple axis by integrating the academic sector with training together with the UTEQ, the University of Arkansas and the Tecnologico de Monterrey, thus promote SMEs and these can connect with the big industries.
Thus the logistics capacity installed in the State, its connectivity, the qualified human resource and its “Triple Axis” growth model, transform Queretaro in a logistic referent in the central part of the country, jobs niche o high specialty and ideal destination for investment.
