As part of the strategies to promote occupational health, Continental Plant 1 created a physical rehabilitation center within its facilities with the aim of providing timely care that helps the worker relax their muscles after repetitive movements.

According to Dr. Rubí López, the physician of the company and coordinator of the area of ​​nursing and physical therapy, this initiative emerged as part of the activities started during the implementation of OHSAS 18001, a standard focused on the health and safety management system at work.


Dr. López has conducted a series of studies on injuries caused by repetitive movements, which allows her to design, together with the therapists, exercise routines that provide well-being to the staff.


Considering that well-being is an essential element in the productivity of a company, the program aims to:


1) Define risks and / or hazards in work stations that may generate health problems and 2) correct injuries.

The physical therapy area was inaugurated in February of this year. It is part of many other initiatives, both prevention and correction, aimed at providing safer manufacturing spaces and reduce occupational health problems.


So far, about 110 patients, both administrative and operative, have been treated. Some cases are related to work activities and others are general or secondary diseases; even so, they are also taken care of by the therapist.


The physical rehabilitation program consists of a series of physical therapies, performed by a certified therapist, totally focused on reducing the condition. Dr. Lopez also performs a whole treatment scheme, which take place in the same facilities of the plant. The results are visible immediately.


Another of the strategies implemented to prevent occupational health problems or reduce injuries is to cause a frequent rotation of workers within their work areas. It is a controlled rotation, through which the assembly operator changes every three or four hours, to a different station. This allows them to change the movement routine and relax certain muscles. In addition to preventing injuries, it keeps the movement alive.


The response of the collaborators has been very positive, recognizing the effort made by the plant to provide well-being and adequate facilities for this activity.


Lopez stressed the following: "well-being is related to humor, so if the worker is not completely well, the desire to contribute will be affected."


"For me, this initiative is very good. I was constantly suffering from severe pain in my arm and with the treatment that the therapist gave me, it took off. This benefit that the plant gives us avoids asking for permits continuously and helps us to work more comfortably," shared a collaborator of the company.

These types of testimonies are the best evidence that initiatives work.
